Celebrating 400 years of imagination in the UK

2017 marked the 400th anniversary of the grant of British patent number one and this was an opportune moment to highlight some of the remarkable discoveries to come out of Britain over the last four centuries.  To mark the occasion the GREAT Britain campaign and the Intellectual Property Office came together to launch ‘GREAT for Imagination’, a showcase of groundbreaking patents delivered through a highly visual digital campaign. 

The Bulb worked with the GREAT team on the exclusive campaign preview held at the iconic Institute of Contemporary Arts on The Mall where a high-profile audience of UK business leaders, inventors, research organisations and cultural institutions were given a taste of Britain’s heritage of innovation. Our concept was inspired by the ethos of the campaign and was designed to lead guests through the start-to-finish process of invention. The first part of the experience therefore focused on creation and was brought to life by standing displays of original objects from the project’s development accompanied by the projection of a making-of video. Moving through into the second area, guests were then met by an elegant exhibit featuring the completed campaign imagery. 

The event was executed in line with The Bulb’s sustainability targets.  All lighting and projection were energy efficient; the imagery was printed on recycled materials using vegetable oil inks and from our fellow Zero Emission Network printers.  All non-alcoholic surplus drinks were donated to a social enterprise and distributed to organisations in need.  The production set and stage were built to breakdown easily and be stored and reused again by the client and bespoke made exhibition plinths were donated to local artists for reuse.
